Recycling Electrontics & Special Materials

This weekend we cleaned up and cleaned out the house.  What a great feeling, I must say.  Now I know it's not as exciting as say, skiing in Mammoth, or going to the Modernism week in Palm Springs, but a good thing to do nonetheless.  We are now 8 paint cans lighter, one broken camera (very sad that it can't be fixed), one bag of fabric dyes (from my costumer days) among other stuff.  We also donated to our favorite thrift store and took three (yes three, don't ask) sets of crutches to a fabulous organization in Pasadena called The Convalescent Aid Society which loans medical equipment to Pasadena and it's neighboring communities. They need volunteers as well if you have some free time...

We found a great site in LA called SAFE Collection Center and there are several locations.  It's the City of LA Sanitation Department of Public Works and it couldn't be easier.  Just use the link to find information and location sites and times or call 1-800-98-TOXIC.

More info can be found at the California e-cycle website: calrecycle.ca.gov or 916-341-6300.

Our house and garage are a lot spiffier and lighter and we are on a roll.  Tag - you're it!

A special shout-out to our good friend, Jan, who took some items to Habitat for Humanity and to use in his amazing recycled material furniture he builds.  Not to mention that fixing many things at our house and spurring us to get a move on.  You all are wishing for a friend like that!

Modern Shed Lust

Many friends of mine are tired of hearing of my lusting after my own modern shed from the first time I saw one in ReadyMade Magazine several years ago with dyi instructions and can be ordered from their site as well as modernspaceandshed.com.  Now there are a number of companies that make these and I want them all.

Love Modern-Shed.  Not only are the great looking, they are very eco-conscious.  Check out their designs and their mission statement as well as photos of happy owners.  They offer different sizes and appointments for every budget and location.

I'll take the 10 x 12 please.

Studio-shed also makes a mean looking outbuilding as well.   Great colors and prices.

Modern Cabana has always been one of my favorites, uses recycled denim for insulation and they can be made into dwelling units as well.  Very elegant. They've even been installed and rented out on vrbo.com as vacation rentals.

kitHAUS also makes great modern pre-fab houses.  Right now you can enter their contest to win a stay in one.

Last but not least is MetroShed.  They also make  MetroCabin, MetroShip, MetroSofa, MetroArtwork....  MetroShip could become an obsession if I don't check myself.

Who needs a driveway?

Amazing. We couldn't stop staring.  And then laughing.  And staring.  Really, who needs a driveway anyway.  Just a leap of faith is all that's needed.

You could always bungee jump.

Now may be the time to buy...says Michael Corbett

Must read LA Times article from this Sunday for those waffling about buying a home.  According to Michael Corbett and his book, "Before You Buy: The Homebuyer's Handbook for Today's Market". If you've got the down payment and can afford the monthly payment - it's a great time to buy!  And by monthly payment, don't forget to add principal, interest, property taxes, and insurance (PITI).  That's the true cost of home ownership.  Oh, and electricity, gas, water, trash and cable don't forget!

Everybody Needs an Anchor

Don't you just love my new Jonathan Adler pillow?!  It was a gift I received yesterday and I couldn't be more touched.  Although I can't admit to penning the tag line, "Everybody needs an anchor".  That was his.

Thanks Steve!  You're the best and I love it.

Skee ball

This article in the LA Times about a bar in Williamsburg, Brooklyn brought back memories of skee ball at the Jersey shore.  And, no, I don't mean The Jersey Shore.  Snookie was way before my time.

We'd play skee ball for tickets and trade our tickets for prizes.  Heaven.

Why don't we have a skee ball bar in LA? Any takers?  I'd go.  Even the description, "long, dark and divey" wouldn't keep me away.

Skee ball anyone?

Trapped in time?

A 1958 MCM in Brentwood on 780 Teakwood Road that has all it's original furniture.  If Curbed LA says it's trapped in time, then why do I want the furniture?  Does that make me trapped in time?!
