Green is my favorite color

Green Tips

A great way to start the new year - greener.

The Two-Minute Test
If you aren’t sure about the flow rate of your showerhead, you can test it using a five-gallon bucket and a stopwatch. Turn the shower on full blast (hot and cold). Place a five-gallon bucket under the shower and capture all of the flow. Fill the bucket for exactly two minutes. If your showerhead uses 2.5 gallons per minute (gpm) or less, the bucket will not overflow during the two-minute test. If the bucket overflows during the test, you do not have a functioning low-flow showerhead.

Shower Power
To maximize showering efficiency make sure that you have installed a low-flow showerhead in all of your bathrooms. All showerheads manufactured in the U.S. must restrict flow to 2.5 gallons per minute (gpm) or less. Some models are designed to use even less water.

Natural Gas Dryers
Consider switching to a natural gas clothes dryer, which is typically less expensive to operate than electric dryers, often by as much as 50 percent.

Get a Free Water-Saving Kit
Southern California Gas Company customers can request a free water-saving kit that includes three faucet aerators and a low-flow showerhead:  www.socalgas.com/kit.

What’s Your Water Footprint?
To learn how water-intensive your lifestyle is and how to lessen your “water footprint,” visit Waterfootprint.org.

Recycling No-Nos
Here are five things, according to earth911.org, that will contaminate or thwart paper mills' attempts to recycle paper and cardboard:
  • Oil and water don't mix. That large pizza box with the oil imprint will become recycled paper with an oil stain.
  • Did your napkin or paper towel blot up a water spill or nail polish remover? It could have been the latter, and, for this reason, napkins and paper towels are not recyclable.
  • Plastic linings added to paper products; a perfect example is paper cups.
  • Wet newspapers
  • Pressure-sensitive adhesives, such as sticky notes, postage stamps, and address labels.

Hang Laundry Out to Dry
Automatic clothes dryers use 6% of total electricity consumed by American homes, according to the federal Energy Information Administration. Save energy, and make your laundry smell extra fresh by putting up a clothesline, just like your grandparents did. Start simple with a few sheets, towels and pillowcases, and if you like the results, gradually do more loads.

Write Stuff
Disposable plastic pens aren’t recyclable or biodegradable. The greener choice is refillable pens, marker, and pencils. When choosing a printer, opt for an inkjet printer, which uses 20 watts of electricity versus 300 watts for a laser printer.

Check for Leaky Faucets
Leaky faucets that drip at the rate of one drip per second can waste more than 3,000 gallons of water each year. Not sure if you have a leak? Read your water meter before and after a two-hour period when no water is being used. If the meter does not read exactly the same, you probably have a leak.

Install Faucet Aerators
Installing faucet aerators and low-flow shower heads will cut water heating costs by 50 percent and save up to $300 per year.

Save Time, Energy in the Dryer
Add tennis balls or dryer balls to your dryer. They will speed up drying time and save you electricity.

If you are in the market for a condo and are going to do FHA financing or you are a seller of a condo - this article is a must read of a very timely issue.

Neighborhood Snapshots

Glassell Park

An upcoming listing in Glassell Park led me question if I really knew exactly where Glassell Park is.  Well kind of.  Now, however, thanks to the geniuses at Mapping LA I do.

The LA Times completed a project they call  Mapping LA where they mapped the many neighborhoods in the Greater LA area and drew boundaries, described the areas and their inhabitants, giving school and crime stats among other criteria.  It is an invaluable resource for finding out information on the different neighborhoods in LA - especially when house-hunting.  It's a vast project so I'm condensing it here for you to use as a tool (and an amazing one at that) when looking to check out new areas. I'll be posting highlights of various neighborhoods so keep you eye out.   Happy neighborhood hunting.

Check out the events and classes at the Glassell Park Recreation Center,  shop at Super King Markets (amazing prices and great ethnic items) and dine, check out the highly rated Delevan Elementary School on Delevan Drive, find a great place to call home and be in the heart of Northeast LA.  See what Trulia's stats are for area homes and then come see my upcoming listing.  Check out some Glassell Park mentions from the folks at Curbed LA

Oh Soho!

Oh the views.  Oh that deck!  The bar, the staircase, the drinks (more on those later), the friendly wait staff, the celeb sightings, the food the delicious food, the olive trees in the dining room, the views, the fireplace, the cozy atmosphere, the lack of cell phones, the views... I could go on and on.  A friend took us to Soho House Friday night for girl's night and it was simply luscious.  We had a drink in the Club Bar ensconced in comfy sofas and chairs with a spectacular of the Sierra Tower where I like to think Rachel Zoe was checking us out from.

My drink, an American Trilogy, was sheer perfection.  Our waiter at dinner was charming and had an accent to make us all swoon - an integral ingredient to girls night.  Following the delicious dinner where the roasted broccoli got rave reviews, we capped off the evening taking photos in the complimentary Photo Booth (black and white of course), and swooning over the ladies room downstairs with it's fabulous wallpaper and views.  Have I mentioned the views?

Oh, and, btw, yours truly got checked out by Kara DioGuardi.  For real.

Thank you Carol!

David Sedaris at Vroman's Pasadena

I've got two words to describe last's nights reading by David Sedaris:  high-larious.  Ok, that's only one word, and it's not even a word, but I don't think Mr. Sedaris would mind.  It fits in with his story of being in Holland and the Dutch linguist talking with him about American's penchant for putting two words together to make one odd one.  Ginormous, fabulocity, skort.  All of which I use.

He read from his latest book, "squirrel seeks chipmunk" and also excerpts of his journal while being on the road recently.  Did I already mention that he's funny.  Laugh out loud funny.  He collects jokes which he asks the audience to tell him while he's signing books.  Which is why I didn't get my book signed.  I can't tell a joke and the line was too long with people telling him jokes.  Oh well, I still love David Sedaris and I love Vroman's Bookstore.  If you haven't read any of his books - do so.  If you haven't been to Vroman's - go.  Both are worth it.

Happy reading.  And laughing.

Zushi = Yum

Simply the best, yummiest, happiest sushi place in Pasadena.  Small, welcoming, tasty, cozy - just some of the adjectives that best describe Zushi.  We've been going there since they opened a few years ago and it's just as good as ever, only the place is a bit more crowded.  One thing we order every time: the Albacore Sashimi with the flash fried onions and garlic.  Best. Thing. Ever.  Also the Shitake Mushroom dish, the baked whitefish roll, and the hands-down best sushi roll is the Sin City Roll.  Delish.  Try the jalapeno poppers if you're with a crowd.  They're sure to please.  If it's warm outside the seaweed salad or spicy tuna salad are delightfully refreshing.  And, if you become a regular like us, and are very nice to the waiters, you might get some free green tea ice cream.  It's been known to happen. They put chocolate sauce on it.  Say no more.

David Weidman Meets Mad Men - A love story

One of my fave artists meets one of my fave shows!  I think that David Weidman may think I'm stalking him.  I've been to his house many times over the past few years to buy many of his vintage prints for myself and friends and not only do I love his work beyond explanation, I heart him and his wife as well.  They are darling and the visit to his studio in the house they built themselves equally so.  So imagine my delight when his work shows up on Mad Men.  Heaven.  (insert sigh here)  If I counted how many pieces I had of his I might get in trouble with the husband...

See LA Times article here:   Set Pieces: 'Mad Men' gets the David Weidman memo

Two prints I've given as gifts:

"Small Elephant"

"Fat Cat"

The book is available on Amazon.com and is excellent and a must have if you're a serious fan.  Like me.  They are carrying some licensed pieces at Urban Outfitters as well:  Urban Outfitters -David Weidman

Pizza Night

So after being out on the town in Pasadena Friday night - culminating in a very late evening at 1886 in South Pasadena (but that is another story), Saturday was a stay-in and order pizza night.  Whilst debating the choices near us in Eaglerockadena and deciding against Casa Bianca, we went with Brownstone Pizzeria.  The reviews described the NY style pizza and that had this New Jersey girl sold.  It was a thin, yummy crust, salty cheese (yes!), and fresh mushrooms and onion sliced thinly.  Quite tasty.  One word of advice though, consider it a warning really, the large?  Oh, it's monstrous. The box doesn't even fit in the oven.  Seriously. We cancelled our Thanksgiving dinner order because the pizza will feed all our guests.  Not really.
